Transforming Teaching

This programme is for schools whose challenge is to raise awareness and understanding of what effective teaching looks like. Knowing what satisfactory, good and outstanding look like is one thing, but knowing how to create the climate and conditions within which teachers can improve does not come so easily. This programme will help schools to not only recognise good work, but will enable them to create the conditions and processes through which teaching can be transformed.

Course Leader: Matthew Stokes

Matthew is the headteacher of one of the largest primary schools in the country that has been on a journey from special measures right to the threshold of outstanding. Central to the work has been the continuous celebration and development of the highest quality teaching and the determination not to distract teachers from the core purpose of their role to stimulate enquiring young minds.

Autumn 2009: Knowing what to look for

Spring 2010: Knowing what to do with it

It’s all very well having lots of observations and evaluations that tell you what teaching is like within your school, but what comes next? The saying goes, “Nothing ever grows by just weighing it more often”, so how do effective leaders help colleagues improve their teaching? Can an inadequate teacher ever become outstanding?

Summer 2010: Creating the climate for change

Transforming teaching is more than just the professional practice of individual teachers in their classrooms - it is about creating a whole school ethos and community of learning for every adult and child within school. This course will focus upon the essential, but often underestimated art of leadership that creates conditions within which others flourish and everybody comes to see themselves as a learner.
