Community Cohesion in Primary Schools

This programme is for schools who are looking to bring community cohesion to life within the school and its partnerships within their communities. While the programme will cover some introductory aspects of the duty and its definitions, the main focus will be on the practical interpretation of community cohesion within the school and its community.

Course Leader: Alan Curtis

Alan is an experienced teacher who has worked across primary and secondary schools in recent years to bring pupils together in ways that challenge settled views of others and promote community cohesion. Within this programme he will work with other colleagues to explore a range of practical activities that help to prepare pupils to live in, and shape, more cohesive communities.

Autumn 2009: Community Cohesion in Primary Schools - an introduction

Led by Alan Curtis and Robert Vincent, this event will provide a practical introduction to the theme. Starting from definitions and common understandings, the course will move quickly into the practical application of community cohesion principles through the use of frameworks and policies that bring this topic to life in primary schools.

Spring 2010: School linking to promote community cohesion

Based upon tried and tested methods, and supported by a folder/handbook of practical activities, worksheets and ideas, this event will illustrate how school linking can secure major learning benefits and improve outcomes.

Summer 2010: Working with community partners to promote cohesion

Led by Alan Curtis and Khalid Mahmood, this course will examine how pupils in ‘outward facing’ schools are able to achieve so much more when the school links effectively with other settings within their community. So many pupils spend almost as much time in other ‘settings’ as they do in school and, by creating strong community partnerships, these pupils grow in esteem and confidence as the wide range of their overall achievements become valued and celebrated.
