Improving Reading in Primary Schools

The “Simple View of Reading” identifies word recognition and language comprehension as equally important aspects required to become effective readers. Significant efforts have been made by all schools to improve the teaching of phonics in early reading. This course will support teachers to improve their children’s understanding of language, leading onto how children make good progress in developing skills of inference and deduction.

Course Leader: Jo Puttick

Jo Puttick is a freelance literacy consultant who is passionate about improving standards in English by ensuring outstanding quality in teaching. As part of this role, she trains new teachers on an “outstanding” teacher training programme. Prior to her current role, she taught in a number of primary schools in challenging circumstances. Over the past few years, she has developed and researched the impact of the successful reading intervention “Inference Training” and presented this to colleagues nationally.

Autumn 2009: Language Comprehension: The forgotten strand?
