Improving Mathematics in Primary Schools

This mathematics programme is planned for schools who are seeking to improve the quality of their teaching of mathematics, pupils’ learning and standards of achievement. The programme will focus on some aspects of mathematics that are often critical to success, as well as looking at the skills of leadership in primary mathematics.

Course Leader: Liz Lambert

Liz Lambert is a deputy head teacher working in Leicester city. Prior to this she was a Lead Consultant for Primary Mathematics and before that an AST in mathematics and ICT. In addition to her current role she delivers the maths training for an outstanding teacher training programme. Her passion for mathematics is one that all participants of her courses will hopefully find infectious and her desire to improve children’s enjoyment of mathematics is one through making maths real, purposeful and exciting.

Autumn 2009: Calculation

  • How do you teach division and multiplication?
  • Can you partition the dividend to calculate division calculations in your head?
  • Do your children really understand how multiplication and division are linked?

This session looks at how to further children’s understanding of the four operations, particularly division through the use of practical resources, models and images, as well as ideas to support them to know their multiplication facts inside out and upside down!

Spring 2010: Pupil progress - Moving children from level 4 to level 5

Our more able mathematicians need to be enthusiastic, excited problem solvers. So often in a primary school the focus can be on moving children from level 3 to level 4. This session looks at how to move children from one level to the next, particularly looking at level 4 to level 5.

Summer 2010: Leading mathematics in your school - driving change

As a leader of mathematics, how do you use an action plan to motivate and drive change in the way that maths is taught in your school? How will the Williams’ Review and the review of the primary curriculum affect the teaching and learning of mathematics? This session looks at developing leadership skills and the implications from current developments.
