Primary Science Improvement

This science programme is planned for schools who are seeking to improve the quality of science teaching and enrich pupils’ learning experience. In particular, the programme will explore the excitement and motivation of high quality primary science that can transform pupils’ development and learning, examining classroom practice, curriculum development and subject leadership.

Course Leader: Maria Dent

Maria is an Advanced Skills teacher in Derby who has worked extensively in both primary and secondary schools. Her chief concern is the enrichment of science learning for all abilities, especially the curriculum for more able pupils. Central to her approach is the use of effective questioning to promote higher order thinking skills and the use of models, diagrams as well as written text to extend pupils’ learning.

Autumn 2009: The state of science in the primary school

Science has been the core subject without a national framework and primary schools have taken a range of different approaches to develop its place within the curriculum. This event will explore the state and status of primary science and examine how the most effective schools are taking things forward.

Summer 2010: Science for the more able primary pupil

Primary science teaching, perhaps more than English and Mathematics, has tended to be more ‘one size fits all’ with less attention given to the learning needs of individual pupils. This course will look at effective practice in extending primary science to meet the needs of individual learners, especially more able pupils.
